Rethinking Regional Events – The Role of Local Government in the Regional Events Space
Nikki Greenwood, Coffs Harbour City Council
Events play a significant role in attracting large volumes of new and repeat visitors to Coffs Harbour, as well as providing a vibrant backdrop of activity, entertainment, education and wellbeing for residents of the broader Coffs Coast community. In 2015 Coffs Harbour was awarded its inaugural International Festival and Events Association (IFEA) Award for being an event friendly city. The city hosted the FIT Touch Football World Cup 2015, which Council won as a result of a highly competitive tender process over many larger venues in larger cities. The Coffs Coast is also the home of the Australian round of the World Rally Championship, and numerous other national and state events of note and myriad community festivals. Working with key partners including commercial, government and industry, Nikki and her team have a clear strategy to attract events to the Coffs Coast that deliver value and a wide range of benefits to the community, as well as building the capacity of the community to deliver their own events.
